Prescription Glasses
At Consett Eyecare, we believe that glasses are more than just a medical aid — they are an extension of your personality. Our experienced team will help you find the perfect frames and lenses to suit your prescription, lifestyle, and budget.
Understanding Your Prescription
After your eye examination, you will receive a prescription that details the correction your eyes need. It may look complex, but our team will always take the time to explain exactly what it means.
- SPH (Sphere) — indicates the lens power needed to correct short-sightedness (myopia) or long-sightedness (hyperopia). A minus (−) value means short-sighted; a plus (+) value means long-sighted.
- CYL (Cylinder) — indicates the degree of astigmatism, where the eye is not perfectly round.
- Axis — describes the orientation of the astigmatism correction, measured in degrees.
- ADD — an additional magnifying power added to the lower part of a multifocal lens, used for reading or close work.
- Prism — occasionally prescribed to correct eye alignment problems.
You have the legal right to take your prescription away and use it wherever you choose. At Consett Eyecare, we are always happy to discuss your prescription openly with you.
Types of Lenses
Choosing the right lens is just as important as choosing the right frame. We offer a wide range of lens types to suit every need:
- Single Vision — the most common type, correcting vision at one distance (either distance or reading).
- Bifocal — lenses with two distinct optical powers, typically distance vision on top and reading vision below, with a visible line between the two.
- Varifocal (Progressive) — offer a seamless transition between distance, intermediate, and near vision — no visible line. Ideal for those who find bifocals uncomfortable or want a more natural look.
- Reading Glasses — designed specifically for close-up work such as reading, crafts, or working at a computer.
- Occupational Lenses — tailored for specific working environments, particularly useful for computer users who need wider intermediate zones.
Lens Coatings & Enhancements
Modern lenses can be enhanced with a variety of coatings to improve performance, comfort, and longevity:
- Anti-Reflection Coating — reduces glare from screens, headlights, and artificial lighting. Particularly beneficial for driving at night or working on computers.
- Scratch-Resistant Coating — extends the life of your lenses, especially important for children's glasses or active lifestyles.
- UV Protection — blocks harmful ultraviolet rays. Long-term UV exposure has been linked to cataracts and macular degeneration.
- Transitions (Photochromic) Lenses — automatically darken in sunlight and return to clear indoors. We stock the latest Transitions Gen S lenses for the fastest adaptation available.
- Blue Light Filter — designed to reduce exposure to high-energy visible (HEV) blue light emitted by screens, which may contribute to digital eye strain.
- Polarised Lenses — eliminate reflected glare from flat surfaces such as water, snow, and roads — popular with drivers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Lens Materials
Lenses are available in a range of materials, each with different benefits:
- CR-39 Plastic — a lightweight, affordable standard plastic. Good optical clarity but less impact-resistant.
- Polycarbonate — highly impact-resistant and thin. Recommended for children, sports, and higher prescriptions.
- High-Index Plastic — thinner and lighter than standard plastic, ideal for stronger prescriptions where standard lenses would be thick and heavy.
- Trivex — similar to polycarbonate but with superior optical clarity. A good choice for safety glasses.
Our Frame Collection
We carry a carefully handpicked selection of frames to suit every face shape, style, and budget — from classic and understated to bold and contemporary. Our collection includes frames from leading brands as well as exclusive independent designs you won't find on the high street.
Frame materials include lightweight titanium, flexible memory metal, classic acetate, and eco-friendly recycled materials such as those used by Coral Eyewear. We also carry a full range of Jaguar Eyewear for men.
NHS Optical Vouchers
Some patients are entitled to an NHS optical voucher towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses. You may qualify if you:
- Are under 16, or under 19 and in full-time education
- Are aged 60 or over
- Have been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
- Are at risk of glaucoma (advised by an ophthalmologist)
- Have a valid HC2 or HC3 certificate (low income)
- Receive certain benefits, such as Universal Credit, Income Support, or Pension Credit
Our team will advise you at the time of your appointment whether you are eligible and help you make the most of your entitlement.
Children’s Glasses
Good vision is essential for learning and development. All children under 16 (and under 19 if in full-time education) are entitled to a free NHS sight test and an NHS optical voucher towards the cost of glasses.
We stock a wide range of robust, comfortable, and fun children's frames. Our team are experienced in fitting glasses for younger patients and understand the importance of a frame that stays put during sport and play.
Free Dispensing Service
Unlike many larger chains, at Consett Eyecare you will always be seen by a fully qualified dispensing optician when choosing your new glasses. We take accurate measurements, advise on the most suitable lens type for your lifestyle, and ensure your finished glasses fit perfectly — at no extra charge.

Whether your frames need a simple adjustment, a nose pad replaced, or a screw tightened, pop in and see us. Minor repairs and adjustments are carried out free of charge for our patients.
